Original article from Lisa Jo Rudy, About.com Guide to Autism
So we begin again with the "Bad publicity is still publicity debate". I disagree. As you can see the above video is an ad. I am an ad major so I can talk about ads FOREVER...
Rethinkingautism.com uses celebrities and sex appeal to carry their message, as seen above. The autism community is appalled by the above ad. I am too, because I think special needs is such a sensitive and difficult subject to advertise... I don't think it should be handled the same way Britney's Spears perfumes are handled.
Thennn..... rethinkingautism.com releases this video that begins, "All too often, in the world of autism, celebrity and sex appeal are used to promote..." blah blah blah.
You can watch it for yourself:
Hmm.... Amd then they create ads like this:
So I'm just really confused. Mixed messages? Maybe not. Maybe so.
Conclusion: watch these awesome videos of real children with autism who do not need sex appeal to convince any one to play with them. Our kids smiles and laughter are more than enough to convince people to join KEEN. that's why I love being KEEN LA's outreach coordinator. I don't feel like I'm being manipulative, I don't feel like I have to use sex to sell our cause, I don't feel like I have to twist our message. If I just tell it how it is, people will join because we serve a wonderful purpose in our community!
